Android 17 Has Arrived: How to Make Browser Games Run Better on Budget Phones This August
Android 17 entered the Android Open Source Project on June 16, 2026, with API level 37 and a default security patch level dated July 1, 2026. Google’s broader July bulletin was published on July 6 and treats July 5, 2026 as the complete monthly patch level.
That does not mean every Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, Tecno or Infinix phone will receive Android 17 immediately. Manufacturers control their own rollout schedules, and many affordable models will remain on Android 15 or 16 for months. The browser improvements below still work on those versions.
The aim is simple: reduce reloads, blank pages, delayed taps and overheating without installing aggressive “phone cleaner” apps.
Step 1: Check the Android Version and Security Patch
Open:
Settings > About phone > Android version
On some devices, tap Software information after opening About phone. Confirm the Android version, Android security update and Google Play system update.
Brand-specific paths commonly look like this:

Charge the phone before installing a major update. Keep at least several gigabytes of free space because Android needs temporary storage to unpack and optimise the new system files.
Step 2: Update Chrome and Android System WebView
Chrome displays the page, while Android System WebView handles web content opened inside many apps. An outdated WebView package can cause login windows, payment pages or game panels to appear blank even when the main browser works normally.
Open:
Google Play Store > profile picture > Manage apps & device > Updates available
Update both:
- Google Chrome;
- Android System WebView.
Some phones use Chrome as the WebView provider and may not show a separate WebView update. That is normal. Restart the phone after completing both updates so Android closes old browser processes still held in memory.
Avoid downloading modified Chrome or WebView APKs from messaging groups. These packages operate close to login forms and browser sessions, making the official Play Store version the safer choice.
Step 3: Clear the Browser Cache Without Erasing Everything
Cache files make repeat visits faster, but damaged or outdated files can preserve a broken script. Clear the cache first rather than deleting all browser data.
On stock Android:
Settings > Apps > See all apps > Chrome > Storage and cache > Clear cache
On Samsung:
Settings > Apps > Chrome > Storage > Clear cache
On Xiaomi and Redmi:
Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Chrome > Storage > Clear cache
Tecno and Infinix may label the menu App management, App list or Storage usage. Search Settings for “Chrome” when the exact path differs.
Do not select Clear storage or Clear data during the first attempt. That stronger reset can remove local settings, close tabs and sign the user out of websites.
Step 4: Leave Enough Storage for Temporary Game Files
A browser game does not require a large installation package, but it still downloads graphics, audio, fonts and scripts during a session. Phones with almost no free space may repeatedly discard those files and load them again.
Check:
Settings > Storage
Samsung users can open:
Settings > Battery and device care > Storage
Xiaomi users normally find the storage panel under:
Settings > About phone > Storage
Delete duplicate videos, old downloads and unused offline media before removing apps that remain useful. Aim to keep at least 10% of internal storage free. Moving photos to an SD card can help, but Chrome’s active cache and Android’s working files still use internal memory.
Step 5: Stop Background Apps From Taking the RAM
Budget phones with 3GB or 4GB of RAM can struggle when social media, video and messaging apps remain active behind Chrome. Open the recent-apps screen and close heavy programs before starting a browser session.
Do not install a permanent task killer. Android already manages memory, and constant forced closing can increase battery use when apps immediately reopen.

On Xiaomi, check:
Settings > Battery > App battery saver
Put rarely used apps into sleeping or restricted modes. Keep Chrome on Optimised rather than Restricted, or Android may interrupt downloads, audio and page activity too quickly.
Step 6: Test a Browser Game Before Installing Another App
After updating the browser engine and freeing storage, test one responsive page over Wi-Fi and mobile data. When a page stops loading under mobile data, open Unrestricted data and permit Chrome. Leave video and social apps restricted if they consume data in the background.

Review automatic downloads, sound, pop-ups and redirects. Do not disable JavaScript because most modern browser games require it.
Step 8: Check Permissions and the Connection
A normal browser game should not require access to contacts, call logs or SMS messages. Review Chrome permissions under:
Settings > Apps > Chrome > Permissions
Camera access may be needed for account verification, but it should activate only after a clear request. Keep location access set to Ask every time unless a service has a genuine location-based function.
Before entering account details, check that the address begins with https:// and that the domain is spelled correctly. Public Wi-Fi can be unstable, so switch to mobile data when redirects, account pages or verification forms repeatedly fail.
A Two-Minute Responsive Test
Before starting a longer session, complete five checks:
- Rotate the phone between portrait and landscape.
- Increase browser text size and inspect the buttons.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data.
- Open another app, then return to Chrome.
- Lock and unlock the screen once.
A page that passes these tests should remain usable on most budget hardware. When it fails only after several apps are opened, RAM pressure is the likely cause; when it fails on both Wi-Fi and mobile data, clear the site cache and confirm the address before changing more Android settings.
